The History:
The jewellery is named after Queen Victoria whose reign lasted from 1837 to 1901 and it's known that no period was more diverse in terms of jewellery styles like the Victorian era.
In the Romantic Period which was the early Victorian period, the love of the young's monarch was reflected in jewellery and fashion and women favored sentimental and symbolic pieces. As more and more women from different social classes started to adorn themselves from head to toe, a lot of pieces were made using low carat gold or were gold plated and fine gold wire was also often added to the design.
In the Grand Period everything changed with a heartbroken Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert, this period being mostly associated with mourning jewellery. While the mourning jewellery came into fashion in the Georgian period at that time the style was focused on macabre, however the Victorian style was still romantic with a way to honour the memory of the departed, with most materials used being black in colour associated with grief. Low carat gold was still used however Revival jewellery became popular including Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian.
The Aesthetic Period saw a major shift in the industry and the theme was completely opposite to the earlier periods with lighter and smaller brooches and jewellery. Diamonds and semi precious gems became popular and were used not for their value but for their aesthetic.
